Surgical Abortion Q&A

What is a Surgical abortion?

Abortion is a safe and common procedure to remove a pregnancy from your uterus. In most cases, abortion services are outpatient procedures, although after 19 weeks, the termination takes two days.

When can I have an Surgical abortion?

Desert Star Institute for Family Planning provides surgical abortions up to 24 weeks of pregnancy. You can request an abortion as soon as you miss your menstrual period.

Arizona state law allows you to have a same day abortion.

If you are 12 weeks or over we would need medical proof of your blood type.

If you’re under the age of 18, your parent or guardian needs a notarized Parental Consent form for a minor.

If you are not able to get parent or guardian consent your must get permission from a Superior Court Judge in a process called Judicial Bypass.

What happens during a surgical abortion?

During a surgical abortion, Dr. Taylor uses medical instruments and a device that uses gentle suction to remove the pregnancy from your uterus.

If your pregnancy has progressed past 19 weeks, Dr. Taylor may use laminaria (cervical dilators) or misoprostol to open your cervix. Most women describe the procedure as feeling like menstrual cramps.

Pain Management Options

  • Local Anesthesia: An anesthetic medication injected into your cervix by the doctor.
  • *Twilight IV Sedation: This medication is given to you by our nurses via Intervenous. This will help you with pain and relaxation - you will not be asleep during the procedure. IV sedation is in addition to the local anesthesia.
  • *Minimal Sedation: Also known as Oral sedation is medication that you take by mouth. You will not fall asleep, but will feel more relaxed. It may lessen your pain and anxiety. This is in addition the local anesthesia.
  • No Sedation: A pain medication will be injected intramuscular to help with pain. This is in addition to the local anesthesia.

* Driver is required to be present with a valid Drivers License at the time of your check-in.

What should I expect after a surgical abortion?

You may experience some cramping and bleeding after your procedure and should prepare to sleep and relax when you go home. You can take ibuprofen or use a heating pad to relieve cramping, but don’t take aspirin as it can increase your bleeding.

You will need to wear maxi pads and avoid using tampons or having sex for at least a week after your abortion. You should also avoid strenuous activity for several days.
